Might not exactly be a secret but we couldn't resist to ask a question that has been hauting the archives forever: why do designers Dolce and Gabbana love leopard? Or why do women love leopard? It's a mystery but we have been collecting fashion files to document it.
Every woman needs a leopard piece in her wardrobe. The scale of passion goes
from a slight fascination to an overblown leopard effect. Of course the direct
answer could be: well it's wild. Everyone likes to have a wild side. Even bon
ton preppy ladies that like to wear pearls around their necks. Sometimes fashion
is the simple answer to an easy question. A black dress for cocktails (or for
curvy days) and leopard print for "sauvage" moments.
Still it's a mystery. Not the print: the obsession. Leopard everywhere, a hymn
to leopard, leopard inside, outside, on clothes, on chairs, on helmets. Leopard
over the years at Dolce&Gabbana: a keepsake.
Feline cruelty and adoration, a message to the audience: beware. A woman's
desire to prevail, seduce, be extremely feminine and assertive.
We couldn't help but dig into it and unsolve the mystery. Who better than the
designers, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, could give us the answer?
"Domenico's mother always wore black but at times she would mix it with a
print shirt: leopard print. It was the actual inspiration but we were
also enamoured with Yves Saint-Laurent when he was alive and he used leopard a
lot."
On leopard love:
"There isn't a particular reason. We fell in love with leopard and we still
love it. You can't explain love. We can't."
On women who like leopard:
"It''s a bit of a mystery. Women like leopard on everything: jackets, pants,
shirts, tank tops, underwear. Leopard can either look vulgar or very refined, it
depends how you wear it. It's a risk, there is a fine line between being vulgar
and stylish, maybe this makes women feel sexy and beautiful? Who knows..."
