As each season comes upon us, my mission as a stylist is to not only source wearable trends but syphon out the classics from within those trends.
Is this a classic or a trend?
I do this so that my clients (and myself) have more of a stable, less throwaway wardrobe as classics stand the test of time, and in these modern days where everyone is tightening their belts and budgets are lower (or non-existent), it makes what I choose all the more crucial.
Right, let’s start with an obvious one for this season – Palazzo pants for men. For most men this is a trend not a classic, trousers are getting wider, but a straighter, leaner tailored look is a classic that wins every time over extra-wide or super-skinny. Unless you have a particular style of dress that emulates a bygone era e.g. Cary Grant, palazzo pants for men are a trend (one that I’m not too keen on to be honest). Also, a single breasted jacket is a must own classic for men.
Next, we have the ‘Florals’ trend. This trend is a definite classic – it’s hot, not just for this season, but also for every Spring/Summer in my opinion as long as it’s not overdone; e.g. matching dress, bag and shoes, you’re on to a winner!
‘Bright and bolds’ – is another trend for Spring/Summer, which I see as a classic and not a trend. Take Cobalt Blue, I have worn this colour throughout the year, for many years. Bright colours especially in winter really lift your mood. As long as you can carry off the colour, bright and bold is always a classic in my book.
The ‘Maxi’ dress or skirt, I see as a day version of a long evening dress, and therefore a beautiful, flattering classic for most women.
Moving on to accessories, an item of jewellery can be a great classic and a great trend. Buy trend pieces cheaply, so you don’t waste money. Search for and buy classic pieces (fine or costume) that are versatile across many looks. Accessories can enhance an outfit by making it look bang on trend or giving it that finishing touch.
Oh, and how can I forget about denim. To be precise a mid or dark denim wash – these are always in style. A jean jacket or straight leg jeans are real classic pieces and staples in any wardrobe. Denim is an evolving classic.
Are there any trends out there you see as classics?
Just to clarify what I mean by a classic. For me, a classic is something that you can pull out time and time again. It has a wide age and size range that can wear it and is easy to make look on trend. Every time you shop always try to look for the classics within the trends. Your wardrobe and bank balance will thank you for it. That is unless, of course, a trend is all you want, for that season and moment in time…saying that it is still good to ask yourself regardless, ‘Is this a trend or a classic?’ and take it from there.
