Dolce & Gabbana’s S/S 2001 was an homage to one of the designer’s favourite epochs and the collection that Madonna wore for her video, Don’t Tell Me. It was also the moment of those infamous Kylie and Britney t-shirts.
Madonna: The Eighties
The S/S 01 collection coincided with Madonna‘s then new album, Music. Whilst recording its tracks, she called the designers to discuss tour outfits. Revealing that she wanted a western style to her outfits, her style combined perfectly with the designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana who had the very same idea for their forthcoming collection who at the time were designing fringed leather trousers for (sexy) urban cowgirls.
The now iconic t-shirt that Madonna is featured above was designed by Dolce & Gabbana for her appearance at the MTV awards in Stockholm. She went on to wear another with Britney’s name for her tour appearance in Roseland, New York.
She also wore one with the name of her son Rocco for her concert appearance at London’s Brixton Academy in 2000.
Images from the designer’s latest book “Diamonds & Pearls” above and below by photographer Guenter Parth illustrate the collection’s rich emphasis on details.
Kitsch, heavily beaded Madonna T-shirts were cult items within the collection and are collector’s items today.
Glitter, shine, and colourfully printed jackets and voluminous skirts added a richness to the collection that appealed to the very eighties concept of work hard, party harder.
Beaded, distressed jeans held together with safety pins, bold-colored leather motorcycle jackets, and sequinned shirts created a sexy, irreverent and punk look.
