December 7th and the La Scala Opera season goes off with a bang! What to wear when invited to this exclusive event on the Milanese social calendar.
Since its beginnings, opera has been transformed from an elitarian pursuit to a more democratic cultural phenomenon. Yet there is one event on the Italian calendar that carries with it all the exclusivity, the elegance and the occasion opera used to represent in the 19th century: the gala opening of the La Scala season on December 7th.
Velvet is a princely fabric, and apt for the occasion. Ladies, a black velvet dress with extravagant baroque embroidery will make you stand out from the crowd. Gentlemen, a contemporary tailored velvet tuxedo with satin lapels, so that you’re not undone from your date. All courtesy of the Dolce&Gabbana FW13 Baroque Collection, which, in part was inspired by opera and La Scala itself. Very handy.
Make a statement by enveloping yourself in a cascade of gold embroidery. A military inspired coat with elegant curls worn with a simple ensemble underneath will do for a man. While for the lady, go a little more risqué with a gold embroidered skirt and a sheer blouse with oversize collar.
Show up at La Scala like a couple of caped crusaders. A shorted cape over an elegant suit is both fashionable and traditional- think of 19th century gentlemen heading to the opera. While for a stringer fashion statement, a xiangao fur cape over a heavily embroidered dress will make you shine like a star.
Opt for a demure look with an organza-ruffled blouse, sequin pencil skirt and an oversize black wool felt cape with hood and satin bow on the collar. A classic tuxedo with satin lapels is a foolproof way of fitting into any gala event. Finish the look of with a black and white polka dot silk scarf for that gentleman’s touch.
Bring some roaring charm to La Scala with a charmeuse mermaid silhouette gown. The demure grey leopard print and rouched bodice are flattering and sexy. For a more fashion forward look swap a classic tuxedo with a blazer with slimmer lapels and two buttons.
Tuxedos, classic or fashion oriented come in many guises. Perhaps for the La Scala event this season swap satin with velvet on the lapels for a more seasonal statement. Black lace will always work at a gala, so choose this Dolce&Gabbana black lace gown with thin shoulder straps and a charm clutch bag.
Stand out by wearing a candy pink chiffon gown. Flowing, with a rouched bodice and a spring like colour will make the sort of statement everyone wishes to get right. Opt for the most classic of tuxedo with a blazer with satin shawl lapels, contrast your date’s idiosyncrasy with classic style.
