Top 10 bicycles
for triathlon 2014
Your bicycle is fundamental to you performance in a triathlon and it’s the little things that make all the difference. Swide has the definitive list of the best bikes for triathlon 2014, whatever you level, whatever your budget, Swide has the tribike for you.
Jamis Allegro Sport
A good al rounder for the entry-level triathlete. With 24 speeds with trim front shifter and wide tyres make it dependable on the flat or climbing steep hills or in descent. The lightweight 6061 aluminium frame is sturdy and sure to take its share of knocks, if a little heavy, while the Tektro mini-V brakes are sure and offer instant braking power.
Gary Fisher 8.2 DS
Good road speed for a hybrid that is also effective off road. The rigidity of the lightweight Gold Series aluminium frame is offset by a 63mm-travel suspension fork so you glide over rough surfaces off road or on city cobbles.
Built for optimum road racing performance but comes in at entry-level price. Nine-speed gearing allows it to reach higher and lower ears than its peers. A standard aluminium frame is weighty but beautifully finished and the specs include a nine-speed Sora groupset with compact FSA Tempo chainset, an impressive load for the price.
Specialized Allez Sport Compact
Swide (hearts) Specialized, they seem to get things consistently right and the whole package here is one of balance, rigidity and lightness to help you go faster from your transition to the line. A 9-speed Shimano gearing and lighter wheels give you adaptability and speed when you need it. An excellent bike for the triathlete with mileage on the cock but a lot still in the tank.
Raleigh Grand Prix
Classed as an entry-level road bike it’s Raleigh’s resurrection of the iconic mid-70s model. Aluminium framing based on Shimano components are standard enough fare, but there is workhorse dependability about this machine that while doesn’t dazzle, it will be around longer than many of its peers.
Cannondale apply their significant experience in aluminium frames and cram this one full of technology. Great geometry and gear, including the Shimano Tiagra groupset, which has really come on. Smooth mechanics blend good ergonomics and the bike is light and nimble on corners. Offers excellent value for money, a high performance road bike that would suit the intermediate triathlete very well indeed.
Raleigh Cadent I11
A high performance hybrid that is adequate for serious completion, reliable in training and sturdy enough for the commute. Raleigh put their best into this range and it shows. Good going on all surfaces it’s a perfect hybrid of ruggedness and zippy performance.
Specialized Transition Elite AL
Bred for triathlon the Transition Elite AL from Specialized is ultra lightweight, and with a beautiful synergy of components, it make for a wonderfully balanced bike. Out of the box it is a perfect competition road bike, but customization may knock things out of kilter.
Cervelo R3 Team
Carbon technology makes this machine one of the lighter, stiffer models in its class. Minimal, stark design make the bike a bare bones rider that comes into its own at the top end of performance scales. Handling is a touch sensitive but for experienced riders there won’t be a problem.
Cannondale Super Six DI2
Highly responsive road racer with evolved frameset and high-class wheels it exudes well-pitched ruggedness. An all round performer, but the frame geometry is aligned for more benefit on steep climbs. A high performance competition bike that comes into its own in high-pressure moments, even it doesn’t represent the best value in town.
