The haunting sounds of The xx

| posted Jan 26, 2010

It’s quite staggering the amount of buzz surrounding London-based band, The xx. Since releasing their genius track, “Crystalised”, they’ve continued to make headlines. Swide takes a look at their newest video, “VCR”.

The xx hail from South West London. The xx have seen their share of ups and down during the new found success. Band member Baria Qureshi left the band late last year, leaving Oliver Sim, Romy Croft and Jamie Smith to continue without her. Putting their loss aside, The xx have come back strong with a new video entitled "VCR", which can be viewed as both eerie and beautiful.

"VCR” was directed by Marcus Söderlund. The video tells a story of two lovers running around in a night of complete debauchery from breaking and entering, starting fires, kissing, smashing and writing on walls. This video perfectly embodies young love and teenage angst. Not to mention there’s a wonderful transition of black-and-white film to color that comes when the young couple reconciles.

The reference to the once relevant VCR, takes us to the time of 90s where melodramatic teen cult shows like “My So-Called Life” ran on every teenager’s television. In all, the song is brilliant and the video coincides perfectly with the feeling of the song. We at Swide, will be keeping close tabs on this band.
