Dolce & Gabbana Teachers for a Day: Trip to China

The Italian newspaper, Il Corriere della Sera, gives and inside view of the designers Chinese trip directly from Beijing.

 

Whenever a designer (in this case double the interest) takes a trip to a far away land "importing" his or her fashion expertise to the newly rising markets, the media goes frenzy with curious interest. What did they eat? Where did they lodge? How did the foreigners react to the visit? Orientalism, we know, has always been a matter of deep reflection, especially when it comes to costumes.

M. Del Corona of the Corriere della Sera thus reports something to add to that booklet of "firsts": Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana that give tailoring lessons to Chinese fashion design students. In an article published on the 22nd of March 2011 called "Taglio e Cucito: la lezione Pechinese di Dolce e Gabbana" (trl: "Cut and Saw: a class by Dolce & Gabbana in Beijing"), the journalist tells the tale of the out of the ordinary event. Two world famous Italian designers that teach the young and shy Chinese fashion students a few of their tricks and even take it further... Ask Wei Fengfei, a third year student at the CAFA, still probably in awe and speechless after a much unexpected event. In fact the designer duo created a dress out of one of Wei's sketches. What better way than to take over China by teaching their skills to the young admirers and future fashion designers. In the interview, the designers admit it's a long road, it actually took them 25 years, however, if you are willing to learn and breathe fashion day and night it's possible. The moderator of the course, an exceptional guest, Angelica Cheung - director of Vogue China.
