La Dolce Vita (Vogue US February 2009)
In February's U.S. Vogue, Contributing Editor Vicki Woods heads to Milan to interview the designers Dolce & Gabbana. After we managed to drag ourselves away from the iconic Steven Meisel images, and of course the soon-to-be-launched lipstick shade (Dahlia - but more on this later) we read on to discover why the designers had a giggling fit mid-interview whilst discussing their new lipstick…
"How can a lipstick - in this case, a remarkably glossy one in a bewitching, romantic, red called Dahlia - produce this helpless ROFL (roll-on-floor-laughing) effect on adults?" asks writer Vicki Woods.
"We're snickering with childish pleasure because when you swivel the bullet up, a warm powdery/rosy smell puffs into the air. It's the exact same smell that curls out when you find a long-forgotten purse your grandmother carried, and it fills you with glee. Which is exactly what Dolce & Gabbana planned ".
"When I was young and opened my mother's bag it was that smell," says Gabbana sniffing again.
"Rose, All lipstick had that smell. We wanted to give it to a new generation of women".
The article goes on to list the inspirations behind the article - with quotes from leading make-up artist Pat McGrath who has collaborated with the designers on the project - why Scarlett Johansson was chosen to be the face of the line and how Stromboli and Hollywood Glamour have played an intrinsic part in developing the colour palettes for the line.
The feature also reveals the news that the Meisel images form the feature will be included in a very special exhibition and book of the same name entitled "Extreme Beauty in Vogue" making its debut during Milan Fashion week, featuring iconic imagery from photographers such as Avedon, Klein, Steichen, Leibovitze.
