It’s a man’s world- or is it?

Posted Oct 26, 2011

Playing between masculine and feminine is an age-old game. For FW11, Dolce&Gabbana exemplifies the duality and adds a touch of irony, frivolity and novel approach to a centuries old phenomenon.

From art, to fashion, and even nature, the boundaries between the sexes are blurred. The Dolce&Gabbana FW collection is awash with masculine and feminine contrasts, in silhouettes, materials and accessories. The tool chosen by Dolce&Gabbana to drive home the masculine/feminine concept, is the masculine silhouette, obtained either by oversize jackets, or by layering.

The masculine/feminine ploy is a game of two halves. On the one side lie typically masculine silhouettes like the coat or the oversize suit, while on the other, embellishments typical of womenswear to heighten the contrast. A see through, figure hugging dress can further emphasize the concept. Alternatively, accessories can always make an outfit feel more feminine, after all women love to accessorise. Sequined shoes, even if they are brogues, or playful hand bags and clutches are the perfect feminine accent to complete the look.

A weapon for the battle of the sexes, in fashion that is, can also be in the form of fabric. A typical masculine silhouettes can be softened by using traditionally feminine fabrics. The Dolce&Gabbana FW11 new tailored look, the long double breasted vest, is transformed into a feminine piece by the brocade and velvet inserts. The cropped lace suit, with trousers strategically truncated below the knee shows off that most feminine of attributes, dainty, think ankles. Add a touch of colour with brightly hued brogues and socks.

Short jackets accentuate the curves. The sensual materials like velvet and sequins add depth and softness to said assets. The softer trousers  further exacerbates the masculine/feminine contrast.

Fabric can be played with in reverse. Typically masculine fabrics, like wool twill and flannel can be fashioned into feminine silhouettes to add a different dimension to the gender game. The skin-tight bootleg trousers are a must have for FW11 and work perfectly well when matched to a classic Dolce&Gabbana blazer. For a younger look, opt for the bloomers. Add a touch of colour and playfulness with star print metallic pumps.

The epitome of the masculine/feminine contrast. Win the gender game with these ensembles. Match colourful sequined dresses with masculine overcoats, embellished with more sequins or fox fur. Go all out with more sequins when it comes to accessories- the Mini Miss Sicily works wonders, as do the sequined clad pumps or brogues. The sheer richness in texture, the bright colours, unusual mix of materials demonstrate true fashion daring, making for a FW11 Dolce&Gabbana woman who possesses a typically masculine trait- courage.
