Fellini’s I Vitelloni inspires fashion

Posted Jun 21, 2010

The non translatable term, a word in dialect, is a source of inspiration for directors and designers alike. After much talk on Dolce&Gabbana’s SS11 men’s collection, we had to put the record straight: who are the Italian Vitelloni?

Ah! Dolce far niente. Where Ennio Flaiano, the renowned Italian screenwriter, told us the term vitellone* was used in his days to define a young man who did nothing all the time, Fellini’s imagery took the actual film to a large scale of Italians and their so-typical way of carrying through life, leisure time being the first priority. An inspiring account of what’s beautiful, fun and dramatic about Italy. Check it out.

*vitellone: thought to derive from “vudellone”, large intestine, used to describe the son of a family who eats without producing in the city of Pescara.
