Thirties glamour meets a disco marilyn

Posted May 3, 2009

The SS09 D&G collection gets an inspiration injection from Warhol model Donna Jordan.

Sailing alongside the nautical inspired SS09 D&G womenswear collection is a little metallic shot of disco gold with a sheen of thirties glamour that adds a glitzy mystery to the collection's nautical theme. So, all hands on deck as we sail off to discover where the designers found their golden inspiration.

Donna Jordan was a seventies icon - the supermodel of its era and part of Andy Warhols' zeitgeist "Factory set", who appeared in the Warhol film L'Amour. Blonde, beautiful and sassy - perhaps her most iconic image is that of "Disco Marilyn" - a cult fashion shoot where she was perfectly cast for the combination of her Marilyn Monroe looks mixed with a modern body and charisma that encapsulated the sexy and modern side of the seventies.

With the inspiration breezes pushing the D&G SS09 sails along - add to the very sassy Donna and the cool side of seventies disco, a timeless thirties Hollywood elegance.

The SS09 gold and icey metallic blue skirts, oversized forms and exaggerated bows, belts and collars on evening gowns and dresses seen on the catwalk developed from the chic 1930's forms that then graced Hollywood yet are a constant feature on the red carpet today for stars wanting to create an old-school elegant allure.

Head for the French Riveria this summer knowing you're well above sea level when it comes to your wardrobe's inspiration.
