Paradise on earth: Dinning at Amanpuri Resort,Thailand

Posted Apr 25, 2011

On the Thai island of Phuket, one of the most unforgettable sites is the tranquil and remote holiday resort of Amanpuri.

Rated as one of the top spa and resort destinations in the world, Amanpuri Phuket is the very first of the chain of Aman Hotel division ever established.  While staying overnight might be a hefty stain on ones financial budget, getting a blissful massage and dining at their miraculous restaurant serving local Thai specials is wonderful opportunity to get a glimpse of this paradise on earth resort!   Thailand is probably the most visited countries in South East Asia. Given the dense tourist population especially on one of the most popular islands of Phuket, real luxury comes into play with isolation and seclusion.

The Amanpuri Resort is located on a coconut plantation with lush tress and unadulterated sandy beaches.  The resort has private pavilions and luxury villa housings as it blends and connects with natural through raw colors and a detailed yet minimalist setting.   Located besides the stunning poolside is the Amanpuri restaurants and dining facility. Its two restaurants offer Italian and traditional Thai cuisines separately. Of course as the saying goes, in Rome do as the Romans do, in Phuket eat like the locals do. Unless one has allergies to various spices or lemongrass, going with the local specials is the best choice.

Traditional Thai specials

The menu changes according to the session and traditional Thai festivals like the vegetarian festival week- yet there are a few habitual classical Thai dishes one must try. To begin, Green Papaya salad with dried shrimp and peanuts, called som tum thai, is a freshening and zesty starter. Also the Fresh Spring Roll wrapped in exotic Thai grapefruit, avocados and served with various sauces is a personal favorite starter.  The chefs’ daily tasting salad platter incorporates three different cold salads like crispy duck, marinated jumbo shrimp and fresh fruits and vegetables together… For a main course, one should go for one of the original lemongrass or coconut curry singular dishes. The “catch of the day” wrapped in a banana leaf and served with assorted vegetables in lemongrass sauce is a noteworthy option. Also Satay cooked in peanut/ sesame paste with chicken, beef or shrimp is astonishing- served with four various sauces ranging from sweet, soy, chill to zesty flavors. Chicken and vegetables with shitake mushrooms in coconut sauce also goes well with jasmine flavored rice.  Of course, the pad thai noodles, made with chili sauce, eggs, shrimp and garnished with crushed peanuts and coriander is a real Thai classic.

Coconut sorbet

For a dessert, to cool off the hot spices and sauces, the light and breezy coconut sorbet is brilliant (even if one does not eat spices foods, its still a great way to finish off the meal). The time-honored mango fruit with sticky rice is a personal favorite. Served with two scoops of brown and white rice and slightly sweetened coconut sauce, the sliced mango is a true Thai treat!

Immaculate service

The serves is effortlessly immaculate. The friendly and sincere Thai waitresses dress in neat traditional Thai outfits, tight flowery hair bums and their efficiency in recommending a local special depending on ones dairy needs and preferences is rather impressive. The staff is proud of their native cuisines but no over imposing and flexible with alterations and various adjustments in dishes.
