A hidden heaven in Southern Utah.

Posted Jul 8, 2011

It’s hot, dry, and arid and doesn’t exactly promote a life of luxury. Take a closer look at the seemingly barren lands of Southern Utah and it is heaven, not hell, that you find.

Most people, when they hear the words Utah and Arizona, think of vast lands dotted with small towns with very little in between except for a sun that beats down with a dry, blistering heat and a terrain that is far from heaven. But tucked into the valley of Canyon Point sits the resort of Amangiri,

This luxurious resort is accessed via a winding road that descends into the valley and has been described as one might imagine entering Area 51. Once you have been buzzed in you are confronted by an alley. It leads you to the central Pavilion, which invites you into a naturally lit grand room that sits on the canyon flloor. Once you have gasped in awe at the architecture you realise that this oasis makes as minimal impact that concrete can on a ancient rock formation.

With this unintrusive approach, the resort, designed by Wendell Burnette Architects, manages to command the space yet provide an intimate setting for those who want to get away from the cities and try an alternative holiday. Here, the beach lounging is replaced by hiking and the architecture by the exposed rocks that can either be enjoyed first hand or glimpsed through the windows that allow the guests to appreciate Canyon Point’s understated natural beauty.

There are 16 suites in the Desert Wing of the resort and and another 18 togehter with the Aman Spa found within the Mesa Wing. You can either dine in the dusk air on the desert lounge or remain within but with the scent of the desert drifting in through the vast glass doors that line the walls.

And then there is the swimming pool that is heated naturally by the sun but also cooled for those sweltering moments. Lined with king-sized daybeds and sun-loungers, this poolside heaven is the perfect place to relax, be waited on and get sun kissed skin.

The resort triumphs as a place of luxury within a terrain that is somewhat inhabitable and also blends in with the natural surroundings, making a impact for all the right reasons. For more information on this desert delight click here.
