A marathon excuse to sunbathe and eat
Any marathon that begins and ends at a restaurant called Breezes by the Bay has us instantly dusting down our hotpants (running, we repeat is not confined to sweatpants).
Held every December in George Town, the Cayman Islands' race day features a marathon, half-marathon and relay race around a course that boasts live steel drum music as you pound along the waterfront of George Town, the islands' capital. The course then veers off into the residential area of South Sound (multi-million dollar homes) with dazzling views of the ocean, before heading off into the financial district before and finishing back along the waterfront.
This year's Cayman Islands' marathon will be held on Sunday December 7th - when, we are assured temperatures are in their manageable seventies. If however an excuse for a Caribbean retreat doesn't grab you, there is always Florence and its food.
The 2008 Florence marathon will be held on November 30th in Florence, Italy - a course that is filled with monuments and artistic sights. The race starts off at Piazzale Michelangiolo, leaving the breathtaking Ponte Vecchio behind and giving participants the perfect excuse to speedily cross of their cultural hits leaving the rest of your time free to feast on pasta and vino.
