Ivy by T. Hayashida

Prepared to be fascinated by this retro-edition of T. Hayashida’s acclaimed photos. It comes as a surprise that this precious survey of American college students has reached the West only a couple years ago. A blast from the past we can’t exactly call vintage, but more so a gift the Japanese made to the Americans re-instructing them on their sense of style. There is no reason to go looking somewhere else when you have ingrained in your culture a perfected preppy look. However, as it often happens in the world of fashion, clothes are not just clothes but anthropological expressions of a culture’s identity or at least a group. Therefore, Ivy-league students shown not only in their attire but also in doing what they do, taking it to an extensive limit of time going actually from life in college to work in the city, is remembering what it was like to be a student during those days when no girls were allowed. Menswear for a private visual book on style – about boys becoming men – a coming of age in fashion given back to us as if catapulted by time.
