Blackberry Empathy: Emotional Data Magnet

Posted Jan 19, 2011

Kiki Tang & Daniel Yoon designed a project sponsored by RIM Blackberry at the Art Center College of Design. Good news is it comes with a ring... The bad news is it's not a Cartier...

After all, communication is all about empathy. Between you and me. Me and him. Him and her. You and us. But how can you create an empathy if you cannot see the person you are calling via mobile? For those of us who wonder if the person we're calling is happy or sad, Blackberry Empathy comes to the rescue! The phone comes with a special biometric ring that you put on while you use your Blackberry. Depending on a lot of body reactions, it determines your mood: happy, sad, angry, relaxed, bored, etc. Then it associates a certain color of light with your mood then shares this with all of your mobile contacts. This way, everybody is aware of your current mood and make their calls & choose their words accordingly.
Another speciality of the concept is that the order of your contacts is re-set every time you click on a new person because the relevance is the key-word in this new Blackberry. So if you happen to click on your mother's name, the contacts that are connected to her will be your sister's mobile phone number, your dad's office number and so on. Then between your mum and dad, there's going to be a certain color of light beam that will reveal their latest interaction and how it went... are they happy at the moment or have they fought? Crazy, we know.

In Daniel's own words: 'It is of course touch based and all the user’s connections are shown graphically so you can see who is connected to whom. Each contact has an avatar that is encompassed by two colored rings. The inner colored ring shows the contact’s previous emotional state, and the outer ring represents the contact’s current emotional state. It is important to show the shift in emotions in order to see how an event has affected that contact. Another important feature that we felt was important was the “Emotional Health Chart”. This chart would monitor the user’s emotional health through an indefinite period of time. One would be able to see how a certain event, or phone call/ message has affected the user. Obviously, if the chart shows someone is always upset, there would be a problem… If permitted, a user would be able to view other user’s charts as well.'

We are not sure if it's going to be the next competitor of Iphone or not, yet we're quite sure that the team who created this will get their name written in gold letters in future.
