The wacky races of tomorrow

Posted Jan 11, 2010

The wacky races are coming off the screen and onto the road. We check out some of the most promising automobiles of the near future.

Who would have thought the concept car would become trendier than the concept store? In the age of green and crazy technology some of the newer models coming out have caught our attention and we're imagining ourselves behind the weel (a welcome fantasy to entertain on a crowded tube on a rainy day). Some of our favourites were:

THE HONDA P-NUT

Good for: anyone after a small car but with more than one friend (that would be two friends...).

Personal Neo-Urban Transport (or P-NUT, let's applaud the marketing effort), a new way to drive smugly in the city (you'll have the exclusivity of the front row and be good to the environment thanks to a cleverly thought-out powering system) and definitely raise a few eyebrows. We mostly love it for how uncanny the resemblance is to an evil squirrel (see front view above); nut, squirrel... endless laughter!

In action... Well, almost.

THE RENAULT ZOE

Good for: the skin AND the environment! (Says so on the package.)

Designer collaborations aren't a fashion exclusive anymore. The Gallic carmaker joined forced with Gallic skincare expert Biotherm (twice the va-va-voom): meet the spa car. Electric and so good with nature, but most importantly a great asset for the image-conscious: the skin glows thanks to a clever spraying of essential oils and the clothes are brilliantly showcased thanks to a lighting system designed to adapt to their colour. The exterior... well let's says it's brilliant for anyone who want to be sure they look better than their car.

A Parisian street and a woman's derrière... could the video be more French!

THE M-6 WIND CAR

Good for: an idealist with a bit of time on their hands.

Another example of green technology making a better use of F1 car parts (the Germans already did it with the Grace bike), but as much as we love the idea we find there is very little breeze on a hot summer day in a crowded city and the thought of how much air conditioning would be required to get us through sitting literally still in traffic... though it might work in the windswept Siberian steppes!

It all looked so easy...

Some of us will always prefer the appeal of strangers on a train; good thing it's making a comeback! Read HERE on Swide!
