The task of creating an eclectic space without any professional help can be
quite daunting and frustrating. However, with a few key rules, your frustration
will ease and your room will successfully come together.
One of the simplest ways to create an eclectic room is to find pieces of
furniture and accessories that are all neutral in color, or all in the same
color. This allows for a harmonious juxtaposition of non traditionally paired
styles, such as postmodern and baroque, to flow together without seeming out of
place. Do not be afraid to mix light and dark woods; just be sure that there is
some continuity in the colors. For example, if you are mixing brown and black
woods, go for a dark brown wood or a dark grain that has been brushed with a
black stain. Once it is paired with the black, the two will flow seamlessly.
In a neutral room, with several different styles, try adding soft pink and peach blushes of color and several shades of beige and white. The mix of styles and layers of soft colors, anchored by warm wood grains, is a sure bet to create a beautiful, cozy, romantic look. For a more modern, eclectic look, try to find furniture that is all the same height. This will create clean lines, and the feeling of open space.
Mixing colors and prints can be a big challenge. When you have a busy print
wallpaper wall and you are looking to have a patterned sofa, you can either make
a bold design choice or a subtle one. If you are feeling bold, find the
strongest color in your wallpapered walls and look to the color wheel for its
complementary friend. Now, you can select a patterned fabric in this color to
upholster your sofa. If you want to do something a bit more subtle, choose to
upholster just a wing back chair and make the sofa a solid (you can always use
throw pillows for pattern and
color).
No matter how bold or subtle you want your eclectic look to be, just remember to look for common threads in the furniture, lighting, and accessories that will bring unity to the space. This can range from a texture repeated throughout the space, a curved line that is resembled on the sofa and light fixtures, or a specific color scattered about. Eclectic style may be a mixed bowl of styles but it is not “style” unless you maintain a sense of balance, rhythm, unity and harmony.
