The design supermarket

Posted Sep 3, 2009

There's more to Milan than shopping for a new pair of shoes - there is of course a whole design scene. Thanks to department store Rinascente and their new Design Supermarket, this chic world can now be accessed conveniently five minutes away from a new handbag.

Vittorio Radice, he of Selfridges London fame, is now heading up Italy's Rinascente department stores, injecting them with a new global appeal and added extras (3 words: roof- top- bar). Should you have no self-control this invariably means you'll go in for a new lipstick and leave, two glasses of proseco later with a plate and a new clock.

The Design Supermarket interiors have been designed by Claudio Silvestrin and offer various sections dedicated to the kitchen, lighting, stationary alongside shop-in-shops such as The Conran Shop, Nespresso and Alessi.

Should your budget not stretch to a new collection of kitchenware, the Design Supermarket's bookstore is packed full of stylish coffee table tomes that will at least allow you to flick through the stylish lives of others.

Lighting by Flos.

A collection of Moleskin notebooks is showcased alongside Wedgewood, Kartell and Tumi luggage.

Should all the minimalist chic exhaust you, the supermarkets's adjoining cafè area, designed by Martino Berghinz is a haven of tranquility giving you the 'open space' to decide on whether to opt for the egg-cups or a book on Coco Chanel.

The Design Supermarket is at the underfloor of Rinascente Piazza Duomo.
