The decadent and the dark can be found in Edinburgh
With a certain Gothic air to this autumn we're putting on our tweed and heading to Edinburgh to filter out some genuine darkness. Not ones to suffer in haunted castles for trends we intend to lay low in Edinburgh’s romantic and luxury Witchery hotel with the ghosts of past guests that include Michael Douglas, Jack Nicholson, Ewan Macgregor, and Pierce Brosnan whom have all stopped by for a little dalliance with the dark side.
Previously described as a "lust den" by a former guest, the rooms are hidden in a cluster of historic buildings at the gates to Edinburgh castle, (you literally sleep next to the castle). There are seven theatrical and decadent suites and all are the perfect antidote to minimal hip.
Rooms are chosen from a selection that sound far more exciting than the usual, "Take the elevator to the seventh floor, and you're in room 1202". Rooms on offer include the library, vestry, inner sanctum, old rectory, sempill, guardroom or armoury and all come complete with wall to wall decadence, over the top antiques, gothic decor and roll-top baths big enough for two.
The vestry is the most decadent and gothic of the suites, a former hideaway of a decadent Cardinal or you could instead head for the library suite which features a bath tub hidden within a book-lined nook all behind a secret door. Important note...remember this before you start on the whisky. Downstairs, the restaurant sources the best of Scotland’s produce (Angus beef, rock oysters, and hot smoked salon) and has a worldwide reputation with a wine list of over a thousand covers.
Getting a room however is not easy and you may need a little help from the other side.
