The Stepper bike: Ride standing up

Posted Aug 31, 2009

Arriving in Europe from the mighty Us of A is another fitness craze. This one however has caught our attention. A bike where the rider is constantly on the move and looks dashingly cool? Count us in...

The next stage in the evolution of the bicycle: Stepper bikes pick up where the traditional bike left off. Pedals have been eschewed in favour of more stable stepping boards and the absence of a seat encourages a better posture whilst riding.

Brainchild of LA-based bike design veteran, Gary Silva, the Stepper is no gimmick. Redesigned from scratch, it provides a better low-impact workout than a traditional bike.

The 3G stepper comes in a variety of options and custom made such as the 'Union Jack' version above.

The bikes are unique in that they have giant paddles instead of pedals. The paddles move vertically, like a step machine, and the movement is transferred via a series of cogs and gears to the wheels. The rider shifts his or her weight from side to side, so there is no need for a saddle.

The 'Spyder' is designed for a younger rider and features BMX style handlebars.

Stepper have a London based pop-up store in New Cross for the duration of the summer, offering a custom shop catering to steppaholics ready to make the one giant leap to the Stepper of their dreams.

From a simple paint job to custom pinstriping, Velocity to Aero wheels, single speed and fixed gear variants; whatever can be imagined can be yours. An off-the-shelf adult Stepper starts at 400 Euros, with the sky being the limit, depending on your tastes and, of course, your budget.
