The Bamboo bike
Calf Design's bamboo bikes are not only cool - but appropriate for everyday use and for racing.
Each frame is built to order and each one is a unique model. Tubes are selected for the weight of the rider and the geometry of the frame. Custom frames as well as mountain bike frames are available.

The bike is made from Bamboo that has been smoked and heat treated to prevent splitting. Lugs are made of hemp fiber, for an all-natural look.

The bikes that weight only 4-6 pounds have carbon fibre chainstays and the bamboo is coated with a satin polyurethane finish to seal it from the elements.

Tandem style bikes are also available (featured above is a triplet convertable to tandem). Their frames can withstand minor crashes yet are fully repairable in the event of a serious crash - plus they have a 25 year warranty.
If the concept inspires you - there is additionally a "Bamboo Bike Project" set up by Scientists and Engineers at The Earth Institute at Columbia University which aims to examine the feasibility of implementing cargo bikes made of bamboo as a sustainable form of transportation in Africa. The goals of the project are to build a better bike for poor Africans in rural areas and to stimulate a bicycle building industry in Africa to satisfy local needs. Read more here.
