Stromboli blows its top
The beautiful Aeolian Islands off Sicily, Italy are of course a summer pit stop for the jet set - their yachts and the glittering nightlife. Step (swim or snorkel) beyond this however and you'll find Stromboli - home to a smouldering volcano, a black sand beach and dazzling clear water.
As Stromboli’s active volcano rises dramatically from the sea - visitor's are given a surreal and unworldly vista ensuring the rest of the world is forgotten, if sadly only for a few weeks.
The remote island is a mixture of contrasts. On one side of the island, previous volcanic activity has darkened the landscape - creating a brooding, smouldering and sultry vista with black sand that glitters in the sun. The rare effect gives the impression of how precious gems may look if they were blown into a million pieces or if a hand from the gods decided to dust the sand with flecks of gold.
The Eastern side of the island possesses a dramatic light. It remains wild - green and dotted with low-rise whitewashed houses, almost identical to when the director Roberto Rossellini, filmed his then new lover Ingrid Bergman in the film of the same name (see below).
It's these same bold colours and dramatic light that have inspired the designers Dolce & Gabbana in their new beauty line that quite literally sparkles with a mixture of Mediterranean contrasts and lushness fused with a retro Hollywood Glamour.
Within the new make-line colours products such as eye shadows, and kohl pencils possess names such as Gold, Stromboli or Black - evoking images of the island's rich, precious black sand that glitters in the sun and the foundations of a new and rare luxury in beauty.
Book your summer holiday now before the make-up groupies get there first.
