Alien places on earth

Posted Oct 15, 2009

In the Internet era it’s tricky to really have the feeling of being in a totally different world when we’ve seen almost everything already via the web. Swide reveals the places giving travelers the real sensation of traveling to another planet.

According to anthropologist Levi-Strauss, you should get lost, to have a real travel experience. Here is a list - many of them created by nature, and a few that have been touched by the hand of humanity.

DASHT-E KAVIR SALT DESERT - IRAN
A large salt desert, 800 kilometers long and 320 kilometers wide, in the middle of the Iranian plateau. The hot temperatures – in summer up to 50° C - cause extreme vaporization, which leaves the mud grounds with large crusts of salt.

ALVORD PLAYA - USA
A desert located in southeastern Oregon, 19 kilometers long and 11 km wide. The desert, often crossed by wild horses is named after General Benjamin Alvord, who served as commander of the U.S. Army during the American Civil War.

WAY-O-TAPU – NEW ZEALAND
An active geothermal area full of hot springs with vivid colors, from yellow to orange to green which is partially possible to visit it.

FOUR CORNERS REGION - USA
An desert Mars-alike area in the junction between southwest Colorado, northwest New Mexico, northeast Arizona and southeast Utah.

SOUTH POLE
A sky as full ok star as is not possible to see anywhere else, traveled by the Aurora Borealis lights.

SOCOTRA ISLAND – INDIA
A small island in the Indian Ocean. Its isolation has created an incredible habitat, with a great variety of unique plants and animals. It has been described as the most alien-looking place on Earth.

BLUE HOLE – BELIZE
A large circular sinkhole near the centre of Lighthouse Reef, over 300 metres across and 125 metres deep. It was formed as a limestone cave system during the last glacial period, then, after the raising of the sea, the roof collapsed.

PARC GUELL (BARCELONA) – SPAIN
A dream garden created by the supreme genius of architect Antoni Gaudi. Some of its buildings seems to be grown inside rocks, or created by aliens able to make inanimate matter alive.

CHERNOBYL - UKRAINE
A Russian city suddenly abandoned after a nuclear disaster. In the buildings there are still dishes on the tables, giving the sense of a foreign civilization disappeared forever. It is possible to visit it, at the moment, only with a guided tour.

HOME
No matter where you live: when you come back from a dirty country you’ll find yours cleaner than before, when you come back from a crowded city you’ll find yours emptier. Coming back from an alien-alike place what will you find? Perhaps your inner core?
