A place in the Mumbai sun

Posted Mar 13, 2009

With Mumbai on the map after film, "The Millionaire" winning at this year's Academy Awards - we find an Indian architect to create a home worthy of an Oscar winner.

When Mumbai was described by director Danny Boyle as being "like New York in the 1980s...the electricity coming out of the place is phenomenal" - Swide knew instantly, back in October it was the next place we wanted to call home (read more about Mumbai's nightlife here) and so off we went in search of a archictect. Below is our new discovery.

Studio Mumbai was established by architect Bijoy Jain who although worked for several years in Los Angeles, felt he "never really left India".

Returning home, he gathered together a task force of bricklayers, stonemasons and carpenters: skilled craftsmen with whom he works, combining their proven experience with his architect's alter ego.

Each project interprets the spirit of the place; not only in terms of materials, but also respecting the presence of nature, seasons and India's infamous monsoons.

Featured below is Palmyra House - a location we'd like to move into for the entire rainy season.
