A one night stand in the snow

Posted Jan 5, 2009

A weekend house that can be forgotten about on Monday morning.

Much as having a weekend bolt hole is appealing - dealing with it for the rest of the week is not, and why we fell in love with this lovely weekend retreat - a weekend cabin in Washington state that literally can be shuttered when you leave.

The 1,000 square foot house can be completely shuttered when the owner is out of town. Don't panic if this all sounds too technical, the shutters close simultaneously using a hand crank. Situated near a bubbling river it has three levels with the upper levels dedicated to the living room/kitchen.

The weekend retreat was designed by Seattle based architects Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects who run the firm based on the simple concept that buildings can serve as a bridge between nature, culture and people, and that inspiring surroundings have a positive effect on people’s lives. We agree wholeheartedly - if we had this view on a Friday night, we'd be smiling even without our usual Friday night cocktail(s).
