However, it is about every five or so years that the trends change significantly. Last year, we saw lots of grays, charcoals, apple green, and celery. This year is certainly playing off the colours of last and bringing with them a refreshing new appeal. The hues and shades have been altered ever so slightly so they are not too different from what your existing paints or furnishings may be. The small variation in hue allows for an easy and seamless change in your home.
This year’s residential paint forecast includes some gorgeous colours. Very soft and creamy yellows that are contrasted with a brighter, bolder color will definitely be splashing the walls. For main hallways and large welcoming spaces, a very light colour such as beige or white mixed with a dab of green or blue is the perfect choice to create a very light and warm feeling. Those who are not afraid of colour will be excited to have more bold choices for your accent colour. Chartreuse and a medium blue (a few shades lighter than navy) are a sure way to instantly bring character and style to a room. If you are looking to makeover your space with more than just paint, these bold accent colours can be a great starting point for choosing fabrics for a reupholstered sofa or chair, throw pillows, drapes and other elements in the room.
If chartreuse is stepping too far out of the painters box for you, than try something a bit more subtle. Mauve and other dusty colours are great for focal point walls, create drama and will add a bit of sophistication to your home.
It is fair to say that gray has made a big impact in the colour world in the past two or three years. This year is no different; gray is a prominent colour in design. A wide variety of shades and hues of gray are being used this year to create calm and soothing emotions. The darker the shade of gray, the more serenity you feel. Dark grays are great for bedrooms or living rooms where you wish to relax and get some shut eye.
Chalk paint is a very fun solution for an ordinary space. Chalk paint has been around for quite sometime now but has more recently made its way to the mainstream. Chalk paint is not only great for a kid’s room, but is very functional in an office space. Imagine being in your office and needing to spit an idea out – an entire wall to either write or draw out your latest thought is a sure way not to forget about it. Chalk paint does not even need to be used on an entire wall. By creating a designated area, you can use the chalk paint as a calendar or message board.
Colour can strongly influence a person’s emotions and it is important to consider this when selecting a paint colour. Even though you may love a particular colour when you see it on a paint card, you should always buy a small sized sample can before you start painting. Testing the paint on the wall you intend on painting will not only help you visualize what the colour looks like on a much larger scale but also with the lighting in the room. Sample cans are fairly inexpensive and well worth the extra step. Bringing change to 2011 can be as easy as a twenty dollar can of paint!
