Veggies never felt so dirty

Posted Mar 4, 2010

It’s a common misconception that being vegetarian means having to sacrifice foods full of flavor. New York restaurant, Dirty Candy, is changing the way we look at vegetables. Dirty Candy cooks with the philosophy that “vegetarian food can be an indulgence”.

Dirty Candy aims at making vegetables something one looks forward to eating, rather something that has to be consumed for the mere sake of maintaining a healthy diet. They’ve managed to achieve this goal by incorporating creative recipes to their menu.

Mushroom mousse

Dirty Candy’s ‘go-to dish’ to convert carnivores into veggie-lovers would be their Portobello mushroom mousse. The Portobello mushroom mousse plate consists of a cube of the mousse, slices of grilled portobellos, a scoop of pear compote and bits of truffle toast. The clever presentation of the mushroom plate makes it difficult for one to spot the vegetables.

Broccolini

Broccolini is a crispy tofu with green ragout and served with an orange beurre blanc sauce.Dirty Candy also offers the vegan version of the dish served with coconut orange sauce, without the butter.

Pumpkin salad

Another favourite amongst Dirty Candy eaters is the pumpkin salad. Owner, Amanda Cohen explains that as much she loves mixed green salad with candied grapefruit pops and grilled cheese croutons, she wanted to introduce a more refreshing take on the mundane salad.
