The White House state banquet: Curry's comeback

It can't be easy having to compete with the legendary stylish, not to mention accomplished hostess Jackie Kennedy. The then youthful Kennedy’s have obviously drawn comparison with the similarly young and vibrant Obama family – but how we wonder will Michelle cope with an early Kennedy banquet in 1961, at which Jacqueline Kennedy sent guests by boat down the Potomac to Mount Vernon, the estate of George Washington, America’s first president drinking mint juleps. Turns out she’s keeping it real and by real – we mean the garden.
On Tuesday the Obamas host their first state banquet for the prime minister of India since taking office in January. It’s the most sought-after invitation in Washington and 400 guests are expected for the party - the most elaborate entertaining the Obamas have done to date.

Desirée Rogers (we’d hate to be her blackberry right now), the White House social secretary selected Marcus Samuelsson, an award-winning African-American chef from the New York restaurant Aquavit, to cook the dinner. He will be working with Cristeta Comerford, the White House executive chef. It’s been reported that said the menu will feature heavily on vegetables sourced from the much-publicized White House garden and curry will make its first foray in to the White House. Dinner will be served in an outside marquee with underground heating and chandeliers.
Our niggling question? Will Michelle provide doggy-bags?
