Michelin inspectors remove anonymity with Twitter

Posted Sep 23, 2009

Accessibility appears to be the buzzword for even the world famous foodie Michelin guides. As they prepare for the New York guide’s fifth edition, and San Francisco’s fourth, the inspectors reveal their cyber faces.

The Michelin guides, first published in France in 1900 as free directories offering hotel listings to promote road travel, and simultaneously attempting to help Michelin tyres sales have always prided themselves on their inspector's anonymity. That being all being said however (and despite a running an advertising campaign underlining the anonymity of their inspectors) Michelin inspectors in New York and San Francisco are using Twitter to record their restaurant experiences.

From New York Michelin tweets include lines such as

Holy cannoli! Belmont Tavern, back from vac, open this weekend. The chicken savoy here is amazing, ditto the cavatelli! Go figure!

Lunch at Jaiya, renovations still under way but lookin' good. Yummy spring roll, seafood red curry, creamy iced coffee...all for under $20.

Whereas over on the west coast, Michelin San Francisco tweets read as

Fighting off a cold and Pho Minh in Cupertino hit the spot…steaming pho was loaded with jalapenos and herbs…definitely Vietnamese penicillin

Interested to check out Chef Roland Passot’s new weekend brunch at LB Steak. Mmmm Prime skirt steak & eggs, oysters or a fluffy omelette.
