Ginger is the new mint

Posted Apr 15, 2009

Ginger is not always a word that inspires cool but 2009 is the year it will take its place on the altar of cool as it takes a leap from the boredom of detox juice, straight into your cocktail.

The must-read food blog epicurious has just posted its 2009 dining predictions, and as ever we were dying to know what will be the next sushi. Amongst quite frankly, a lot of very concerning trends - rustic/growing your own/and value (we're not quite ready to grow our own vegetables yet), there was one trend that caught our eyes, if only initially for its keywords - cocktail and New York.

Whatever those urbanites are up to, we want to know. Turns out, "Ginger Is The New Mint". We imagine bars in the know are wiping mojitos off the menu and replacing their chic mint displays mint with the knobbly stuff. NY based chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten is a stockist of the ginger beer, Hitachino Real Ginger Ale produced by the Japanese Kiuchi brewery - a supplier of top-fermented ales. Look-out for its unique "Owl" logo, and an innovative selection of beers - wines are promised soon.

Just think ginger next time you're at the bar.
