Cocoyama - foodies to do you good

Posted Oct 18, 2010

Who said carbs are bad? The hip clientele at London Chocolatier and Artisan Baker Cocomaya would surely disagree.

Cocomaya - London, UK - Founded by Joel Bernstein, former head of concept at Liberty of London, designer Walid al Damirji and Agent Provocateur founder Serena Rees, it is no wonder that the place is constantly filled with London’s fashionistas.

The communal table in the bakery means that one can arrive alone for a quiet coffee and croissant, only to end up making friends with others at the table, bonded by a love for beautiful food. In fact, when we were there a lot of the customers seemed to know each other already (is this the new private members club, and if so, where is our invite?).

However everyone is there for one reason and that is to sample the delicious goods scattered throughout the room, covering every surface with tarts, pastries, bread and cakes. For the carb-conscious among us, there are also miniature versions of the classics – doll-sized croissants and pain au chocolats allow a chaste taste of heaven without the need for a two-hour gym workout afterwards. One word of warning:  do not come in a rush, as you will need at least ten minutes to choose between the 70 kinds of bread and pastry on display.

The chocolate shop next door is like a scene from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and just as adventurous too. No stale truffles here – the team are always creating new flavours such as lavender, cardamom and raspberry, and can rise to any challenge. One project involved creating a bespoke menu of tea chocolates for an independent tea importer, while another evoked the flavours and smells of a client’s country estate. Whatever your poison, Cocomaya can provide, so tell all your friends – carbs are back with a vengeance.
