Chinese New Year-Food philosophy
Swide highlights the five top Chinese dishes that aim to bring balance and good fortune to your life:
1. Dumplings (Jiao Zi) = Prosperity

The Chinese believe that dumplings bring prosperity as the name 'jiaozi' bares a resemblance to the chinese word for paper (currency), so appropriately enough dumplings are thought to bring great wealth to those who consume them. Serve with either chicken, pork, or neither; just be sure not to be greedy and share the wealth.
2.Tray of unifying treats=Togetherness

It is customary to kick off the New Year with something sweet in Chinese culture. This tray of sweets are divided into eight portions (a traditional lucky number). The tray represents a sense of togetherness and unity. Families often offer sweets that consist of sugared fruit and vegetables.
3.Noodles=Long life
Upon celebrating Chinese New Year, be sure not to cut your noodles as they represent longevity and long life. Like the lines in our palms, each noodle symbolizes our life span.
4. White cut chicken = Purity & Happiness

Chicken is poached in rice wine to the point it becomes white and garnished with scallions in this celebratory plate. White cut chicken is a popular New Years' dish as the white chicken represents purity.
4. Black Moss Seaweed 'Fait choi' = Good Fortune

Black moss is a staple in Chinese cuisine as it eaten as vegetable. The word for black moss in Chinese, 'fat choi', actually translates as "hair vegetable" as well as prosperity. We would like to wish everyone a prosperous new year, 'Gung hay fat choy'.
