Attack of the coneheads

Posted Feb 24, 2010

There used to be a time where waffle cones were used to serve just ice cream, but the trend these days have cones being incorporated into the realm of fast food in intriguing and creative ways; while some being more practical than others.

Nothing beats reaching the cone after eating your favourite ice cream. Why should ice creams have all the fun with waffle cones? We’ve been noticing a common trend of expanding the use of cones beyond gelaterias and now being used as a type of ‘meal mobility’.

We first witnessed Italy introducing pizzas in the shape of cones with Konopizza a few years back, understanding very well that it can be difficult to avoid sauce stains when you’re cramming down that delicious slice of pizza. In solving this ‘sauce dilemma’, Konopizza devised a cone-shape pizza served with various stuffings ranging from 4 formaggi to prosciutto. The portable konopizza would be great quick meal option for those fashionistas running from show to show during these hectic fashion weeks and wont have worry whether the tomato sauce will drip over their Manolos.

The konopizza has been so popular that they’ve expanded past Italy and can also be found in the U.K. The pizza-cone pandemonium doesn’t stop there, it’s recently arrived in New York. What better place than New York to introduce the cone-pizza since the pizza is the city’s quintessential fast-food. Having just opened, K! Pizzacone has been getting in an influx of pizza-lovers rushing in to try the cone treats. Owner, Ingo Pinto explains why he decided to open the shop:

"I've been traveling around the world, and we saw this in Portugal, in Brazil and Italy," Ingo Pinto, the shop's co-owner and manager, said of their specialty, the pizzacone. "Why not in New York?"

A healthier conical option-Salad cones

Pasta cone from Balena

Pizza cones make perfect sense, but pasta cones? It seems as though there may have been some cone-spiration overseas that has yet to translate. Korean chain, Balena are famous for serving up pasta in waffle cones as a fast food option. We’re not sure how far that trend will span, but we are intrigued by the idea.
