A-list chef Mario Batali puts Spain on the menu
Gwyneth Paltrow’s chef du jour and road trip companion is uber cook Mario Batali. Hitting a TV screen near you now is the new On The Road series that sees Gwyneth, Mario, Marc Bittman (NY Times wine writer) and Claudia Bassols (beautiful and talented Spanish actress) travel the length and breadth of Spain seeking out its culinary secrets (and the occasional spa).
With Mr. Batali uppermost in our culinary minds we did a little research to find out what’s next in store for him. Turns out it's a fish called John Dory. His new venture is a meatpacking seafood spot in conjunction with British chef April Bloomfield who currently works her magic at the ridiculously successful Spotted Pig restaurant and partner Ken Friedman. Plans are afoot to open the restaurant in late autumn on tenth Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets.
All this talk of Spain has also led us to also re-discover some of our old haunts in Madrid. Casa Lucio is Madrid’s foodie mecca and although established in 1974 is still notorious for being difficult to get a table. Mario and Gwyneth (we saw them on TV and therefore feel on first name basis with them) visit the same restaurant during their road trip snacking on classic Castilian food...Jabugo ham, fish, and the restaurant’s signature dish huevos estrellados, literally meaning broken eggs. If its good enough for the TV, its good enough for us. Its definitely time to make some friends in Madrid.
