Don't be Fake be Pale: Au-tan

Posted Mar 8, 2011

I have a dream that all human beings will be as pale as possible. This summer I want to see a beach full of radiant white porcelain bodies. To achieve this one must start preparing now....

Step one of the Go Pale Don't Fake campaign is to truly believe in the power of this precept. Although we are fully aware of damage caused by the sun on our skin and have since Academy hay days gone spray, we are still reluctant to go totally pale. While researching for this article, it came to my attention that we do put on a pedestal those who glow in the pallor of those words, just think of the likes of Nicole Kidman and Dita Von Teese, but we probably drop our arms in despair because if you go "that" pale you must be flawless. Sun-tan or color can hide a bad skin, but bare-white won't.

So you see, it's more than a switch of skin tones but rather a whole entire concept of beauty: you should start by taking care of yourself. Wisdom shows that happy people "glow" from within so being happy is the first step, the second one is being healthy and eating skin-friendly nutriments such as avocado for instance, keeping young, drinking lots of water, using wonderful products to nourish your skin. And oh yes, what do models always say when asked "how do you take care of your skin?": "I always remember to cleanse before going to bed". That's right girls don't sleep on make-up.

Nothing new so far? Well it takes just a few easy steps to take care of yourself, and a warning: don't spray orange on yourself. Especially before a wedding when you are wearing a tube dress and your face looks like a peeled orange but your body doesn't.

For celebrity types, most admired Victoria Beckham has turned from tango'd over the years to pale "refined" sophisticated woman. The message is clear: if you want to be taken seriously you must look shadowed. No chaperon to hold your umbrella under the sun? A hat will do the trick, plus UVA protection formatted for three year olds.

Again researching, nerdily came upon a wonderful new word: au-tan (autmn tan).

If one must resort to some help to cover the imperfections just use a shimmering sheen over the right foundation.

Nerd research number 2: did you know that Coco Chanel had turned bronze in to fashion as "Riviera Chic"?

But fake tan has been voted the "biggest beauty blooper of the 20th century" by the Superdrug Poll, and even "the Royal Ascot issued a ban discouraging with an etiquette guide the orange look for racegoers".

So for once Coco Chanel's impeccable taste did a faux-pas, or perhaps we are ready to turn back a century or move forward. Quisas.
