The Stone Age diet

Posted Mar 8, 2010

We're always on the hunt for the newest diet trends, but why not opt for a diet that dates back 10,000 years? Swide explores how the Stone Age or otherwise known as "Paleo" diet, is designed specifically to fit humankind.

A recent diet trend has us looking to our ancestors for nutrition advice with the Paleo diet. Paleo-dieters argue that humans have not evolved from an agriculture-based diet, but from a hunter-gather diet rendering optimal health. The Paleo diet primarily consists of fish, meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds.

Dr. Loren Cordain, author of "The Paleo Diet", states that "our Paleolithic ancestors were lean, fit and free from heart disease and other ailments that plague Western countries", partly in thanks to the Paleo diet.

Paleo-dieters have described the  Paleo diet as a 'lifestyle' rather than just a diet, as it also involves fitness. Many Paleo-dieters have come to abandon the confinements of gyms and modern exercise machines. Paleo-dieters can be found participating in outdoor activities like climbing and sprinting as early man used to. Many fitness programs have come to encourage the diet like international fitness group, Cross Fit. Cross Fit suggests that combining their strength-building programs with the Paleo diet results in improved health and body toning for its members.
