The Cape Epic Race

Posted Mar 26, 2009

For those of you looking for something new how about the world's biggest mountain bike stage race? An eight-day, 700km mountain bike odyssey that starts in Cape Town, South Africa.

The Cape Epic "Magical and Untamed" African mountain bike race has become the biggest cycling event in South Africa. Every year the country's attention turns to the most challenging race in Africa and has put SA on the international cycling map with a bang.

Going into the race for the first time is said to be an experience in itself - a voyage into the unknown and has been experienced by the professional cyclists such as Lance Armstrong as well as amateurs (with months of training obviously).

With 7 stages - the Cape Epic race is now on stage 4 having started on Tuesday in Cape Town.

A significant part of the The Absa Cape Epic route is on private land that belongs to landowners who only open up their land for the race once a year giving cyclists exclusive views and access to previously unsee vistas -  as well as crossing several sections of land which belong to MTO Forestry, Cape Nature and South African National Parks.

Follow the riders as they cross Africa through their daily blogs at www.cape-epic.com/Rider_Blogs

We're also in love and awe of the images taken by riders from previous years (featured above and in main) - in particular Ronny Roe www.flickr.com/photos/25536737@N06
