Skiing, minus the snow?

Posted Jan 27, 2010

Just a few weeks shy of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, Swide takes a look at the newest ski-inspired workout to serve both amateurs and pros alike.

With the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics commencing in a matter of weeks at Cypress Mountain, we’ve decided to dedicate our latest fitness update to the high-flying world of winter sports. The New York Sports Club (NYSC), famous for their unique fitness programs, has launched a new workout program known as the “Black Diamond Workout.

The last thing one wants to occur during a ski trip is to sprain or break a body part. The New York Sports Club has devised an exercise program aimed at strength building and conditioning called the “Black Diamond Workout”. The workout concentrates on lateral side-to-side movements, enhancing one’s balance and muscles to adhere to quick pivots. The goal is to prepare oneself for the strenuous activity skiing requires, as well as offer a fun and new way to working out.

New York Sports Club fitness instructor Ami Hoff explains why the “Black Diamond Workout” is a must-try:

"If you don't have the right conditioning in your body, when you hit the slopes it is going to be much harder. You're much more prone to injury also. Even if you don't snowboard or ski, it is a great workout because you are getting your upper body, your core, your lower back and legs and everything anyway."

If you don’t live in New York, breathe easy; most of the routines can be done at home with a yoga mat.
