Pat McGrath: Make-up tricks & Dolce & Gabbana
We love to name-drop especially when beauty and fashion are involved, so it took us approximately five seconds to jump at the opportunity to quiz leading catwalk make-up artist Pat McGrath. We dived in asked her about worldwide make-up differences, how to create a smouldering cocktail look and when (if ever??!) we shouldn't wear make-up, plus as a collaborator on Dolce & Gabbana's recently launched make-up collection, Pat offers Swide her insider advice on how to use these new products to our best advantage. Take, Take, Take...

GENERALLY SPEAKING, WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT MAKE-UP TRENDS BETWEEN ITALIAN, FRENCH, BRITISH & AMERICAN GIRLS?
Generally speaking, I can say that Italian girls have a penchant for sexy, smouldering eyes and nude glossy lips. In London, the girls are much more likely to be experimental with cutting edge, “night club” looks such as a bold and unusual lip colour or dramatic eye makeup inspired by punk rock - daring and graphic.
French women usually wear their makeup in a classic style, chic and elegant. I envision gorgeous red lipstick and perfectly finessed black liquid eyeliner. In New York, women tend to enhance their natural beauty with a polished look. They often will favour neutral brown eye shadows with subtly shimmering highlights, clean looking eyeliner and mascara, and a lip colour that gives flattering definition without being too strong a statement. Of course there are different kinds of women everywhere, but for the most part this is what I have observed in those cities.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THIS SEASON'S TRENDS?
Perhaps the hottest trend of the season is the new red lip look. The red is richer and blue based, sometimes appearing as a deep burgundy or a vivid magenta. With or without gloss, the lips are the main focus.
Eyes with these bold lips are best worn simply with neutral soft brown shadows and pearly highlighter to give the eyes subtle definition, finished with a delicate and beautiful liquid liner at the top lash line, extended out slightly to a perfect point. Use mascara only on the top lashes, carefully applied to keep lashes separated and clean Šlike false lashes!
This makeup is reminiscent of 1950s Hollywood bombshell glamour, forever with a loving nod to the everlasting beauty and glamour of Marilyn Monroe. This look can be worn by any woman, regardless of skin colour, or age. Although it’s a retro 40s-50s inspired makeup, the flattering effects are timeless.

WHAT LIPSTICK AND EYE SHADOWS WOULD YOU ADVISE GIRLS TO WEAR WITH DOLCE & GABBANA'S NEW "STROMBOLI" NAIL VARNISH (INSPIRED BY THE SICILIAN ISLAND OF THE SAME NAME)?
As Stromboli nail varnish is such a dark and dramatic colour, I suggest to play off the golden glitters it contains by mimicking that gold shimmer onto your lips by wearing the Lip Gloss in Gold with a lip pencil that is neutral to the your lips. This will beautifully compliment the shimmering effect of the nail varnish, as the lips are still soft and alluring while the nails have an undeniably edgy look.

LIKEWISE WITH DOLCE & GABBANA'S "DAHLIA" LIPSTICK, WHAT EYE SHADOW WOULD CREATE A COOL COCKTAIL LOOK?
Using the Smooth Eye Colour Quad in Champagne will be just the thing to balance sexy Dahlia lipstick with subtly sultry eyes. In the quad, apply the silvery colour onto the eyelids, the cool brown in the crease of the eye and under eyes blended from base of lashes. The black shadow can be used to deepen the outer eyelid and crease; it can also be applied with a damp brush as eyeliner at the base of the top eyelashes. Finish by highlighting under the brows and inner corners of the eyes with the pale ivory frost. This look is versatile yet dramatic, and can also be worn with a nude or neutral lip colour.

TO ACHIEVE A SEXY RESULT, HOW SHOULD WE USE POWDER?
Sparingly! A completely matte look is glamorous, but not especially sexy. What is REALLY sexy is a “dewier” complexion - moist and feverish. Only use powder where shine is unwanted, such as across the forehead and sides of the nose. When using an all over powder foundation such as Dolce & Gabbana the Makeup Perfect Finish Powder Foundation Wet or Dry, be careful not to apply too much product so that skin appears “masked”.

3 REASONS WHY PEOPLE SHOULD BE CURIOUS TO TRY DOLCE & GABBANA "THE MAKEUP"
First of all, the overall quality of the products themselves is superior. Much care was taken in formulating Dolce & Gabbana the Makeup to provide longer wear ability than other prestige brand of cosmetics. The Perfect Finish Powder Foundation gives just the amount of coverage you want (depending upon how much and how it is applied), and the colours stay true throughout the day. Lipsticks have a subtle rose scent which adds to the glamorous feeling one gets from applying a creamy smooth lipstick with rich colour payoff, creating a multi-sensory experience of sight, smell and feel.
The colour range is dazzling, from barely there nudes to all out glamorous rich reds and untamed pinks. The shadows in the Smooth Eyecolor Quad and Duos cling and do not crease up, fade or flake; the colours look freshly applied for hours longer than other eye shadows. Velvety textures in breathtaking colour combinations. The Nail Varnish is amazingly longwearing and chip resistant in an extraordinary collection of beautiful and unique colours. The breakthrough formulation along with the range of hues will make Dolce & Gabbana Nail Varnish the indisputable choice for a gorgeous and long lasting manicure.
Secondly, the golden metal packaging is unique and unlike other prestige brands. The sleek, sturdy cases evoke a warm richness, and securely shut with a most satisfying little “click” sound. All of the containers are durable and beautiful.
Last, but certainly not least; the colours themselves! Rich and sumptuous, all of the colours developed for the line are simultaneously timeless, classic and wearable while also complimenting Dolce & Gabbana’s recent ready to wear collections. Although all of the colours are amazing, I am most thrilled with the Dahlia Classic Cream lipstick and Stromboli nail varnish. Both of these products will fly off the shelves and quickly help to earn Dolce & Gabbana the Makeup the reputation of the most highly sought after name in cosmetics!

WITHOUT MENTIONING SLEEPING & THE GYM, WHEN SHOULD A WOMAN NOT USE MAKEUP?
If you love makeup, you will always need makeup. I don’t like to tell a woman when she should and when she should not wear makeup. Always wear it when you want to wear it. Makeup is fun! You should always have freedom to express yourself through your look.
