High-altitude yoga

Posted Mar 24, 2010

At a studio, on the beach, or at the park, we do yoga just about everywhere. But, can you actually say that you've ridden a chopper to the top of a mountain and have done the 'warrior' pose?

Helio-yoga is the offspring of both helio-skiing and helio-hiking. If one of the main aims of traditional yoga is to ease both the body and mind, then why not practice it where you feel the least distracted? The peaceful mountain tops of the Canadian Rockies would serve as a great place to be 'one' with yourself.

Actually, many cities in Canada have started to host the unusual tourist activicity known as Helio-yoga, like the name suggests a helicopter is involved. As part of a sightseeing tour, tourists embark on helicopter tours and practice yoga on mountaintops. Tour providers and fitness groups have joined forces in providing all sorts of high-altitude activities from hiking to snow shoeing, ice walking to yoga. Calgary's Icefield Helicopter Tours and fitness group, Martha-s Heli-hikes are just a few of the many partnerships blooming in Canada.

"Tourists are keen on connecting with nature may find themselves high on the mountain top, resting in “child’s pose, overlooking some of our country’s most stunning scenery. There’s nothing quite like 'tree pose' at 9,000 feet", shares Travel Junkie.
