Forget running, hit the runway

Posted Feb 19, 2010

Every fashion season, it seems as though the heels are getting higher and higher. In the midst of fashion week, Swide explores the trend in fitness that not only will help a fashionista demand attention upon arriving to a fashion show, but also improve her health at the same time.

Dr. Emily Splichal, also known as “Dr.Legs”, created a fitness series that aims to build balance, strength and most importantly confidence amongst stiletto-wearing public. Riding the subway, it’s not unlikely to find a girl in the highest of heels enduring obvious pain, all in the name of fashion. Dr. Splichal teamed up with New York Sports Club (NYSC) in providing catwalking fitness course, “Catwalk Confidence”. The class focuses on body alignment, isometrics, core strengthening and stablization techniques to help women strut their stuff without sacrificing their posture. Catwalk Confidence even made Timeout NY’s top fitness programs list of 2010.

The popularity of Catwalk Confidence has led to an influx of runway-inspired workouts across North America. The Art of the Catwalk studio in Florida offers variations of catwalk classes:some involving more dance-geared workouts, while others still include music, but without the complicated choreography. The reason why catwalk classes have gained a great deal of success is because it’s helpful in our everyday lives and is different from the average workout. A catwalk student shares her testimonial on why she loves attending the classes, “The classes are a great way to build confidence and get your "Sexy Back!"

The pure existence of ‘catwalking classes’ prove to men everywhere that it’s no cake walk being a woman and sometimes we have to enroll in courses to get it right.

Check out Catwalk Confidence for more information about classes or even dvds (for the shy-types).
