Claudia Schiffer: The biography

Posted Jul 28, 2009

Although we assumed supermodels landed on earth from a far off galaxy called supermodel planet, the truth is (spoiler alert!) that supermodels do have a human story of discovery too. Swide traces Claudia Schiffer's rise to super stardom.

Born in Rheinberg, Germany, supermodel and actress Claudia Schiffer, reached the height of her popularity during the 1990s and was one of the world's most successful supermodels, appearing ona staggering 900 magazine covers.

Claudia originally wanted to become a lawyer and worked in her father's law firm. She later dropped these aspirations when, at seventeen, she was spotted in a nightclub in Dusseldorf by Michel Levaton, the boss of Metropolitan Model Agency, who signed her up on the spot.

After completing her education, she flew out to Paris for a trial photo shoot and soon afterwards appeared on the cover of French ELLE. Having made several other magazine appearances, she quickly achieved supermodel status when she was selected by Karl Lagerfeld to become the new face of Chanel.

Claudia has appeared numerous times on the cover of Vogue. Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan and was the frst model to make the cover of Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, The New York Times and People magazine who in both 1990 and 1991, selected her as one of the '50 Most Beautiful People in the World'.

During her modeling career, Claudia has released four exercise videos entitled Claudia Schiffer's Perfectly Fit, as well as featuring in a number of films and music videos. Her first appearance in film was in the children's movie Richie Rich in 1994, going on to star opposite Dennis Hopper and Matthew Modine in Abel Ferrara's Blackout. In 2001 she made a cameo appearance in Ben Stiller's Zoolander, and in 2003 she appeared in the hit film, Love Actually

Claudia remains a prominent figure in German society - in 2006 she helped present, along with with Pele' awards during the World Cup opening ceremony.

Claudia now lives in London along with her husband, the film producer Matthew Vaughn and two children, Caspar and Clementine. She is currently a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for the United States and a spokeswoman for the charity Breast Cancer.

When discussing today's modeling profession she's been quoted as saying, "Supermodels, like we once were, don't exist any more."
