2010: menswear 20th anniversary… 1996: 10 years of womenswear excellence

On 19th June, Dolce & Gabbana will be celebrating 20th years of menswear
designs, which will surely bring back memories. Looking back, one cannot forget
their first commemoration for the womenswear line, it was in 1996.... 10 years
of fashion creation gave birth to a book that surprisingly enough was not
written by the two designers but by contributors that freely expressed their
idea of the Dolce&Gabbana woman and what this duo had brought into the
fashion world. The book itself is a nod to their style as it features mainly
black and white images as suggested by the cover. Inspired by the neo-realistic
film era, one can read between the lines names like Visconti, Sophia Loren,
Magnani.
Isabella Rossellini’s introduction sets the tone and shows how this duo made it
through the hard times and revolutionized the way Italian women are considered.
With Stefano and Domenico, she can proclaim her femininity, her origins and her
sensuality openly. As Franca Sozzani puts it “they have pushed their Sicilian
style”, they have solved the conflict between tradition and modernity by
revisiting Sicilian cuts with innovative fabrics and shapes.
This book is very emotional, like the video showing interviews with celebrities and contributors such as Franca Sozzani, Carla Bruni, Monica Bellucci, and Kate Moss. In 1996, Stefano and Domenico could declare that they have been understood as fashion designers, today, their fame, their fashion empire, their worldwide recognized talent place the Dolce&Gabbana Man on top of the game: he is charming, elegant and has a style of its own.
