The opposite of minimalism

Posted Jun 15, 2009

For their S/S 1996 collection Dolce & Gabbana took a trip to the Aeolian islands off the coast of Sicily. Inspired by their summer visit, the designers transformed its breathtaking scenery into passionate inspiration.

Taking inspiration from the film "The Adventure" starring actress Monica Vitti and directed by legendary director Michelangelo Antonioni - the film follows the story of a girl who mysteriously disappears on a yachting trip. While her lover and her best friend search for her across Italy, they begin an affair.

Aside from the haunting cinematography - the designers were inspired by actress Monica Vitti's Sixties sweeping kaftans and glamorous yacht attire. Taking this as a starting point the designers added their own dose of style, adding strong leopard and zebra prints to soft summer silhouettes.

Images from the designer's latest book "Diamonds & Pearls" above and below by photographer Guenter Parth illustrate the collection's rich emphasis on details.

As a reaction to the Nineties minimalism the designers maintained the Dolce & Gabbana DNA with rich embellishment on accessories.

As if mirroring the unspoilt nature of the Aeolian Islands, detailing was precious on relaxed and easy kaftans that reflected the island’s bohemian nature.

The striking collection was featured on the cover of Italian Vogue, as seen above on Kate Moss, who also modelled the collection on the catwalk.

Zebra printed shoes were standout pieces in a sea of minimalism - see above in Italian Vogue.
