The Mix Masters

Posted Dec 9, 2008

Dolce & Gabbana's FW 96/97 collection broke the mould. Inspired by the Fellini film, " Le Notti di Cabiria" - the collection was sexy, refined, yet ever so slightly eccentric.

Heartbreak is never pleasant - but it's better to look fabulous when it happens.

The imagery, inspiration and advertising from FW 96/97 collectionwas inspired by Fellini's " Le Notti di Cabiria". The film tells the story of a waifish prostitute who wanders the streets of Rome looking for true love but finds only heartbreak.

Mixing signature Dolce & Gabbana corsets with a cardigan, layering prints or styling a black dress with floral shoes - create hints of the unexpected - as if dressing was an afterthought. The type of woman whom you spot in the street, and who looks fabulous, yet at the same time has a style that looks effortlessly thrown together - as if fashion was an afterthought.

On the catwalk, evening dresses were composed of nude lace virginial corset bodies completed by contrasting leopard and floral print chiffon skirts, whilst coats were cut in the timeless 1950's style of Balenciaga - voluminous with three-quarter length sleeves.

Prints mixed cult provocative cherry & floral prints, with zebra skin, corsets and knitwear. This new look broke the style rules, and rewarded the designers with the title - "The Mix Masters", setting a trend for a "mix and match" look, that still dominates the fashion world today.
