S/S 90: The Sixties

Posted Mar 23, 2009

Dolce & Gabbana's latest breathtaking coffee-table book Diamonds & Pearls showcases this early collection in a dreamlike and rarefied atmosphere.

Photographed by Guenter Parth, the book's images illustrate the collection in a new and surprising light.

The beginnings of the 90's brought a change in attitude in the fashion world. Designers Dolce & Gabbana were one of the first fashion houses to return to celebrating a woman's innate sensuality - a look they've continued to showcase ever since.

The SS90 collection was inspired by Italian artist Raphael Sanzio's painting of a siren surrounded by mythical sea creatures. Dresses took on fluid forms emulating dreamlike underwater life and referencing the rich colours of the Renaissance era.

This Dolce & Gabbana collection was also the first to use Swarovski's precious crystals. A range of coloured stones in vibrant hues such as red, electric blue and green were hand stitched to chiffon, tulle and precious fabrics creating eye-catching and form-fitting items that, simultaneously fluid, captured the light and creating movement.

The book, Diamonds & Pearls stimulates the senses - and brings to life the emotion that springs from wearing a work of art. Take a peek at more images from the book here www.dolcegabbana.com/diamonds-and-pearls.
