FW 2004: The Helmut Newton collection

Posted Mar 16, 2009

Dolce & Gabbana's latest breathtaking coffee-table book Diamonds & Pearls showcases this iconic collection in a dreamlike and rarefied atmosphere. Photographed by Guenter Parth, the images illustrate the collection in an elegant and surprising light.

The designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have always found inspiration in strong, beautiful and elegant women - and so it comes as no surprise to discover their 2004 winter womensnwear collection was a tribute to the eroticism of photographer Helmut Newton.

The collection was both elegant, feminine and yet simultaneously allowed the wearer to reveal her strong masculine side in elegant trousers suits, tuxedo jackets and ambiguous silhouettes.

They were also references to Yves Saint Laurent’s iconic 1940's collection from 1971. The designers pulled their homage literally to the present with classic luxury pieces such as furs and jewellery worn with mini-skirts and Mickey Mouse t-shirts.

Fabrics were also re-worked to add a modern twist, red sequins were added in between the pleats of a skirt, tweed was recast in grey and Chantilly lace was placed on the fronts on winter coats.

The quest for perfection and sheer beauty are the core focus of the work of designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano
Gabbana. When brainstorming a book to showcase their work - “real dolls” that symbolise sheer beauty and are intentionally timeless rather than models was the unique choice.

Diamonds & Pearls stimulates the senses - and brings to life the emotion that springs from wearing a work of art. Take a peek at more images from the book here www.dolcegabbana.com/diamonds-and-pearls
