Dolce & Gabbana spring summer 1986: the 1st collection.

Posted Apr 18, 2010

Dolce & Gabbana presented their first collection “Geometrissimo” during SS 1986 Milan Fashion Week.

As we all know, the eighties have brought a lot of newness especially in fashion. It is not a surprise that today’s designers are still very much influenced by this decade that was all about power.

“Big is beautiful” could have been the slogan of Italian fashion design back then. Oversized shoulders, mini-skirts, experimental hairstyles prevailed on the Milanese catwalk as they did in Paris or New York. “Power dressing” was an imposed theme however Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce decided for their first ever presentation to follow their own inspiration and to create a collection that would reflect their spirit and reveal their personal style.

Their proposition for spring summer 1986 casted structured clothing, strong lines but most of all a fitted silhouette. Stretch fabrics were used throughout the collection and showed in dark and neutral colours to underline a feminine control. The press did buy into their vision but they were left with no financial support and took the decision to stop their collaboration and to not produce the SS86 Collection.

A post strike, a cancellation letter that never arrived to the manufacturing company, a family support and the Dolce & Gabbana fashion story went on.
