F/W88-89. Women go for menswear

Posted Oct 17, 2010

Barocco meets Neorealismo. A masculine suit on women, the first pinstripe ensemble with a baroque spin that definitely underlines femininity: this was the edgy challenge Domenico and Stefano were ready to face back in 1988.

The brilliant idea was to explore woman sensuality through men traditional clothing. The newness was definitely in the choice of textures and fabrics.

Strongly inspired by Visconti and the costumes used in his movies such as La Terra Trema and Senso, the creative duo transferred a cinematic look to a striking street style.

From the set to a woman’s wardrobe, your 88-89 winter staples had to be modified and reviewed by these two fashion genius. So think red velvet for the glamour on working outfits that took almost everything from the closet next door: waistcoats, white sleek shirts, matchy-matchy jackes & trousers.

A dramatic collection because life is like a movie, the matter is the intensity of emotions one can convey, fashion can help if not do the job. The Designers have always praised cinema and especially found inspirations in shots that feature real people and daily life. Of course Visconti, of course Rosselini, of course De Sica, to name a few have and are still referred to in the trimmings, the cuts, the collections and the campaigns. Back in 1988, Domenico and Stefano were climbing the fashion ladder, and their women were rolling up their sleeves.
